Attacking is any attempt to hit a monster or kill several of them during a battle that causes direct damage to the monster and depends on the Attackstat of the attacker plus any bonuses from heroes, soldiers, weapons, armor, or magic. Attacks also can get bonuses from your Elite Guard or the attacker's Army Size (up to 200).
The following items are used when attacking. The game automatically selects the best weapon of each type to use in battle.
When attacking a monster, you will receive gold, experience points, and possibly demi-points for each attack. A regular Attack uses 1 stamina and a Power Attack uses 5 stamina. In mid May 2010, some bosses (Genesis, Ragnarok, and Skaar) were given a new normal style button to distinguish it from the many new Power Attack options added.
Power Attacks are merely a way to burn through stamina with fewer clicks. This type of attack was introduced in order to lessen the load on the game's servers.[1] Although five regular Attacks are supposed to be approximately equal to a single Power Attack, a Power Attack tends to inflict slightly more damage than a regular attack, consequently yielding slightly more gold and experience points. Power Attacks will yield fewer Demi-Points per stamina than regular attacks, as Demi-points are awarded per attack.
In early May 2010, the button style was changed sightly for the 5x Power Attack on some newer bosses.
When attacking, some of your friends (army members) may "help". At random times, the game may decide that your friends "help" you. A "helping" friend will randomly cause you to either deal more damage, take less damage, earn more experience, or earn more gold. Dealing more damage is not the same as getting a critical hit. Taking less damage usually means taking no damage. Earning more experience always doubles the experience (1-2, 2-4, 3-6). Earning more gold always doubles the regular amount.
In early May 2010, a 10x stamina cost option was added to certain newer bosses (Skaar, Genesis, and Ragnarok). Presumably this is equivalent to twice the old 5x Power Attack. This option shows up after you have passed 100 Stamina
Soon after 10x was introduced (around May 12), a 20x stamina cost option was added to certain newer bosses (Alpha Bahamut, Bahamut, Genesis, Ragnarok, and Skaar). Presumably this is equivalent to twice the 10x Power Attack and appears once you have 200 stamina. The 5x Power Attack may no longer be available for these bosses.
Less than a week later, a 50x stamina cost option was added to certain newer bosses (Genesis, Ragnarok, and Skaar) and appears once you have 500 stamina. So many new buttons were added that left/right scroll arrows were needed to see all the new buttons.
The new Bahamut, the Volcanic Dragon fight introduces new types of attacking based on the class chosen by the attacker. Each attack type takes 5 stamina, similar to a Power Attack. Elite Guard doesn't appear to add bonuses.
In early May 2010, a 10x stamina cost option was added to Bahamut. Presumably this is equivalent to twice the old 5x option.
In mid May 2010 along with the new Alpha Bahamut, another button for 20x stamina cost attacking abilities was added, so now you have to scroll left and right to see them all.

SUMMONER_ID is the Facebook ID of the monster summoner, not your own.
attack_key=X determines what kind of attack you will do against a monster. If you change X to a specific number, you change the kind of attack that you do.
Using attack_key=2 will give a 5 stamina regular attack.
Using attack_key=5 will give a 10 stamina regular attack.
Using attack_key=8 will give a 20 stamina regular attack.
Using attack_key=11 will give a 50 stamina regular attack.
Using attack_key=1 will give a 5 stamina tactic attack.
Using attack_key=4 will give a 10 stamina tactic attack.
Using attack_key=7 will give a 20 stamina tactic attack.
Using attack_key=10 will give a 50 stamina tactic attack.
For Bahamut (Alpha and regular), Azriel, Geheena, Corvintheus, Valhalla, Giants:
Using attack_key=1 will give a 5 stamina attack.
Using attack_key=3 will give a 10 stamina attack.
Using attack_key=5 will give a 20 stamina attack.
Using attack_key=7 will give a 50 stamina attack.
Using attack_key=2/4/6/8 will give a 0 stamina attack. It costs no stamina, deals 0 damage, yields $0 and 0 experience, but is still counted as an attack and your party (as well as yourself) will receive damage.
Other attack_key values will give a 5 stamina attack.
When using RANGER or WARLOCK class:
action=attackDragonSpecific&attack_key=1 will perform a 5 stamina attack
action=attackDragonSpecific&attack_key=4 will perform a 10 stamina attack
action=attackDragonSpecific&attack_key=7 will perform a 20 stamina attack
action=attackDragonSpecific&attack_key=10 will perform a 50 stamina attack
If you are looking for monsters to attack on the forums, be very careful about which links you click on. Some people have been doing a nasty thing where instead of posting their siege assist link, they instead post an attack link (like the ones mentioned above). This means that instead of spending 1 stamina to help build a siege weapon, you may instead spend 50 stamina attacking that monster. A siege assist link will not have an attack_key=X and the action= will be doObjective.
It is considered to be bad form to make people unwittingly spend this much stamina on a monster.
It is considered to be good form to chain people who practice getting people to click on a 50 stamina attack link, trying to pass it off as a siege assist link. Or to simply sabotage said monster - depending on the circumstances (a monster full of 'good' players could simply have one 'bad' player doing this, so it is worth considering this possibility before encouraging other friends to tag it with minimalist attacks).
